Frida Kahlo

Frida Kahlo was a Mexican painter best-known for her many self-portraits. Born in 1907, she was involved in a trolley accident at the age of 18 that left her in a full-body cast and bedridden for months. She began painting to occupy herself during this time, using a custom easel she could use while lying in bed.

Her paintings drew subject matter from her personal experience, and many are suggestive of the pain she experienced throughout her life. Her work broke taboos, often depicting gruesomely honest subjects such as her miscarriages. The style and subject matter of her paintings incorporate Mexican national and indigenous traditions and sometimes used Christian and Jewish themes.

Frida Kahlo was often overshadowed by the work of her husband Diego Rivera during her lifetime, though she did exhibit in Paris once in 1939. Her fame grew after her death beginning in the 1970s and 80s. Her influential biography, Frida: The Biography of Frida Kahlo, was published by Hayden Herrera in 1983 and started a craze for Frida's life and paintings. Her work began to be exhibited around the world, and her fame continues to grow to this day.
